TRAP NEUTER RETURN

TRAP NEUTER RETURN

Good for our community! Good for cats!

 (en español)

Trap Neuter Return is a process in which community cats  (cats living outside) are humanely trapped and sterilized by veterinarians. After recovery, they are released back to the EXACT location in which they were trapped. Not only does TNR put an end to the cycle of breeding, removing cats would merely open up territory for new ones to move in. This is known as the ‘vacuum effect’.  In some places, cats that cant be adopted are just destroyed when turned in to shelters. TNR is the most humane and ONLY proven effective long term solution in reducing cat populations.

If you or someone in your neighborhood is looking for ways to keep community cats off of their property, please consider this lengthy list of options for Humane Cat Deterrents.

FREE or very low cost cat food for cat colony caretakers

  • HSSAZ: Along with the pet pantry, colony caretakers can get one bag of food, once a month to supplement the food they buy for their community cats. The amount of food is not determined by number of cats cared for. Distribution is at the Humane Society, 635 W Roger Rd, on the first and third Wednesday (4-6PM) and Sunday (2-4PM) of each month. All distribution food for community cats comes from donations and is only available if we have donated food. There is an application on the website hssaz.org/petfood, and walk ins are accepted. There are currently no spay/neuter requirements
  • Hermitage: Along with their normal pet pantry, colony caretakers can pick up cat food for their community cats on Thursdays. There is an application and other requirements for this food. In return for food, Teri asks caretakers for a $5-$10 donation, clean tin cans, or volunteer hours from any organization. Caretakers are given either 20-25lbs of food depending on the size of the colony and food availability. Call or text Teri for more information 520-403-2398 or email purrfectpawstnr@yahoo.com
  • Cody’s Friends: Colony caretakers can email codyscommunitypets@gmail.com for more information on distribution days and amount of food given. Spay and neuter certificates are required for colony cats at this distribution.

Barn Cat aka Working Cat programs are adoption services for feral cats who cannot return to their original community.  Farm and ranch owners, for example, may be looking for cats to live on their property to take care of mice! The Humane Society of Southern Arizona and Pima Animal Care    Center both have programs.
