The National No Kill Model

WEBSITES:

The No Kill Advocacy Center http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/
The No Kill Advocacy Center was founded in 2004 by Nathan Winograd. Nathan had created the nation’s first—and at the time, only—No Kill community. This website provides animal advocates with resources to learn and implement the No Kill Equation.

No Kill Nation http://www.thenokillnation.org/
A national advocacy organization dedicated to ending the systematic killing of healthy and treatable animals in our nation’s shelters. No Kill Nation provides resources and support to No Kill advocates and advocacy groups, local and state governments, and private and municipal shelters nationwide that are working to implement the only model of sheltering to achieve save rates of 90% or better — the No Kill Equation.

Are You Enabling The Needless Killing Of Shelter Pets? “Our battle for a No Kill nation is not against the public. It is against the cowards of our movement who refuse to stand up to their colleagues and friends running shelters that are mired in the failed and defunct philosophies that allow (indeed, cause) killing.”

AND FROM A STATUTORY PERSPECTIVE:

The Dark Side of Mandatory Licensing and Neuter Laws.  By Nathan Winograd. In case you do not understand why mandatory laws, as these, are NOT part of the No Kill Equation.

Companion Animal Protection Act. A model law which is being actively pursued in parts of the country.

BOOKS:

Nathan Winograd
Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation & The No Kill Revolution in America
Redemption is the story of animal sheltering in the United States, a movement that was born of compassion and then lost its way. It is the story of the “No Kill” movement, which says we can and must stop the killing. Redemption is the winner of five book awards and redefined the animal protection movement worldwide

Irreconcilable Differences: The Battle for the Heart and Soul of America’s Animal Shelters
The follow up to Redemption, Irreconcilable Differences tackles the myth of pet overpopulation, the war on pit bulls, feline/canine abortion, end of life “euthanasia,” and more

Order Irreconcilable Differences

Friendly Fire
When animal lovers learn about the tragic reality of cruelty and killing that is endemic at our nation’s “shelters,” and that the national organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the ASPCA defend the killing and thwart reform efforts, the first—and the most logical—question that inevitably follows is: Why? Friendly Fire answers this often confounding question while telling the stories of animals who have become catalysts for change: Oreo, Ace, Patrick, Kapone, Hope, Scruffy, Jeri & Murray, and others

VIDEOS:

STRAYED, a video by Mike Fry and Beth Nelson (Animal Ark Shelter). The story of how the animal welfare movement lost its way. And how some people are working to bring it back home. A 20 minute video inspired by the book Redemption.

“While the Seattle Animal Shelter does not consider itself a “no kill” shelter, our save rate falls within the recommendation of the “No Kill Nation” advocacy organization. * “Save Rate” calculation from calendar year 2012. Calculation excludes owner requested euthanasia of terminally-ill or dangerous animals (emphasis by NKPC).

Out The Front Door. A blog tracking the save rate of open admission and limited admission shelters across the country.
