In July 2017 the Town of Sahuarita began providing their own Animal Control Services with impound/adoption services from HSSA. A request for records for the first year of services yielded the following information, along with a comment that Sahuarita Police Department will be collecting better records in the future!
The Town received 385 calls about stray animals; they do not have a separate count of dogs and cats.
They could confirm 17 animals were returned to owners by their officer but they also determined their ‘circumstance codes’ were not being used correctly and they believe the actual number is much higher than that. They will be documenting more accurately in future.
Additionally HSSA reported receiving 140 animals from Sahuarita – 51 stray/DOA, 71 owner release and 18 confiscated. Confiscated includes those for bite quarantine or for neglect.
NKPC does not know how many, but many Sahuarita animals were brought to and taken in by The Animal League of Green Valley. TALGV reports they will no longer be accepting Sahuarita animals. SO if you live in Sahuarita and need help with a stray pet, contact Sahuarita Animal Services at 520-445-7877, hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. After hours or emergency call 911. And you may bring a stray (or surrender a pet) at HSSA 327-3088, 635 W. Roger Rd. Here is the link to Sahuarita’s Animal Services Website.
We expect in the future to be able to report the outcome data for the Sahuarita (and Marana) animals who are admitted to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.
